I'm going to use this blog as a personal notebook for my sightings/observations on Ambergris Caye and its collection of small mangrove cays and lagoons.
Belize is not a large country, about the size of Maine, but it has the most varied habitats within its boarders you will ever find. These rich habitats support a variety of exotic avifauna that has not yet been accurately numbered. Those who try and count them such as The Belize Audubon Society, come up with figures like 530 species. Bubba and I would like to know them all.
Belize map
This is the County of Belize shown in its relationship with Mexico and Guatemala. Notice that Ambergris Caye is geographically the tip of the Yucatan Peninsula and only an Island because of the break at its Northern most end. This Break is the political boundary between Belize and Mexico. The North half of Ambergris is the lime stone Litoral forest filled with cenotes that is Southern Yucatan, the South half of Ambergris is classic Barrier Island composed of sand, coconut trees and Mangrove lagoons.
Sightings Map
I'll try and reference locations in the context of the numbers on this map.
Example reference for a Black Crowned Night Heron might be # 19 Mexico area East beach side among shallows of mangrove along beach path or
Yucatan Jay colony at # 9 mid island beside the jungle air strip behind new development of condos.
